Rock Family Tree

Rock Family Tree, 1998, thirty framed photographs, each 5 x 7 or 7 x 5 inches, with wooden connectors, dimensions variable.
I took portrait-style photographs of various rocks on my family's summer property in Finland, then arranged these rocks into a family tree structure. On one side, the rocks become increasingly proximate to human presence and eventually turn into things like benches; on the other, the rocks grow ever more distant and evolve into “loner rocks” who leave land behind and head out to sea.
