Telemarketing Indeterminacy

While I was teaching at Brown University in 2004, I sat in on a class guest taught by composer Alvin Lucier. He spoke to us extensively about John Cage’s work 1959 performance work Indeterminacy during one session of the course. I decided to take Cage's format (the one-minute-long spoken story) to be the guiding principle for Telemarketing Indeterminacy, and I combed Cage’s piece for words and sounds that I could piece together into a one-minute telemarketing infomercial for Indeterminacy itself (I was nervous about it initially, but I think Lucier loved the irreverent homage.) Telemarketing Indeterminacy was my contribution to our end of semester recital.
